To celebrate its fifth year in business, New Yorkshire gallery the Hepworth Wakefield is creating a sculpture prize, The Guardian reported.
Because the Hepworth Wakefield is known for its sculpture collection (its named after sculptor Barbara Hepworth, who also lived in Wakefield), the prize will be awarded biannually to a United Kingdom–based sculptor. The winner will receive £30,000, or about $46,000; the first four shortlisted artists will show work at the gallery in October 2016.
Unlike the Turner Prize, which only considers under the age of 50, the Hepworth Wakefield’s prize won’t be bounded by any age limits. As Simon Wallis, the gallery’s director, explained to The Guardian, it won’t matter what career stage the artists are in either. “One of the things I wanted to do away with right away was age restrictions, I’m simply not interested in whether someone is 21 or 101,” Wallis said.
