The Guardian has just released surveillance video of a 12-year-old Taiwanese boy stumbling and breaking his fall by plunging his fist through a painting at an art exhibition in Taipei. It’s really something. The organizers of the show, “Face of Leonardo: Images of a Genius” in Huashan 1914 Creative Park, said the injured painting, a 350-year-old oil on canvas work by Paolo Porpora titled Flowers, had been valued at $1.5 million.
The footage, which was released by organizers of the exhibition (all publicity is good publicity!), shows the boy, wearing shorts, a blue Puma T-shirt and holding what appears to be a soda, strolling past Porpora’s still life, then suddenly catching his foot and tumbling into the painting. According to various reports, the boy’s family will not have to pay for the repair of the gash in the bottom right of the painting since the piece was insured.
