The VIA Art Fund has revealed the list of the recipients of its 2018 grants. The organization has given the awards, ranging in value from $15,000 to $100,000, to 17 winners in four categories—eight artistic production grants, seven incubator grants, the 2019 VIA curatorial fellowship, and the 2018 Frontier Art Prize. Recipients this year include Martin Puryear (who will represent the United States at the 2019 Venice Biennale), Tavares Strachan, and Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles curator Jamillah James.
Bridgitt Evans, the president and co-founder of the VIA Art Fund, said in a statement, “We are gratified by the unwavering support of our patrons, who have consistently recognized visionary artistic projects, underwritten general operating support for small-scaled arts organizations, and endorsed talented curators like our 2019 curatorial fellow, Jamillah James.”
In addition to awarding its grants, the VIA Art Fund helped two museums acquire major works. Thanks to funds from VIA, John Akomfrah’s Precarity was added to the collection of the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, and Daniel Buren’s Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile went to the Walker Art Center.
