KölnSkulptur has revealed the artist list for its upcoming 2017–19 edition, which will be titled “La Fin de Babylon. Mich wundert, dass ich so fröhlich bin!” (“The End of Babylon. I wonder, that I’m so happy!”). Curated by Chus Martínez, the ninth edition of the sculpture biennial—held each time at the Skulpturenpark in Cologne, Germany—will open next month.
In a statement, Martínez, who was formerly chief curator at El Museo del Barrio in New York, explains that the title refers to the way the exhibition’s eight new sculptures envision a society beyond our own. “On the one hand, we have the life we have, our circumstances are hard to change, our possibilities hard to manifest,” she writes. “And there are times when we believe the past was a better place, and others when we see the time we live in as full of possibility, openness.”
