The Fondation Prince Pierre de Monaco has announced the shortlist of artworks nominated for the 47th edition of its Prix International d’Art Contemporain (PIAC), which is presented in honor of a piece “by an artist at the forefront of their practice.” The three pieces are Tree Identification for Beginners (2017) by Yto Barrada, which was nominated by the Whitney Museum’s curator of performance, Adrienne Edwards; Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death (2016) by Arthur Jafa, nominated by curator Tumelo Mosaka; and FRAGMENTS (2016–ongoing) by Rayyane Tabet, which was nominated by the director of GAMeC in Bergamo, Italy, Lorenzo Giusti.
The value of the award, which is given every three years, is some €75,000 (about $85,000). News of the nominees comes in tandem with an announcement of the jury, this year comprising artist Kader Attia, who’s also the founding director of the art space La Colonie in Paris; Ilaria Bonacossa, the director of Artissima; Reem Fadda, curator of the Abu Dhabi department of culture and tourism; Candice Hopkins, senior curator at the Toronto Biennial of Art; and the artist and filmmaker Isaac Julien.
Past finalists for the prize include Carlos Garaicoa, Saâdane Afif, Candice Breitz, Didier Marcel, Su-Mei Tse, Guido van der Werve, and Dora García. PIAC’s artistic director, Lorenzo Fusi, said in a release, “As an organization, we are determined to continuously broaden our perspective and are deeply committed to offer a platform to a plurality of diverse voices in the field of contemporary art and visual culture.”
