ROBERT WEDEMEYER/COURTESY STERLING RUBY STUDIO AND GAGOSIAN GALLERY
The Hammer Museum in Los Angeles released the artist list today for the 2016 edition of its biennial, “Made in L.A.,” and it is an intriguing one. It includes just 26 names, from promising young upstarts like Dena Yago and Martine Syms to superb, older, under-recognized figures like the painter Huguette Caland (whose work some may recall from the Prospect 3 triennial) and the incisive artist and activist Fred Lonidier (a 2014 Whitney Biennial participant), who will be present through his Labor Link TV project. Other names on the list include mid-career painters Rebecca Morris and Silke Otto-Knapp, fashion designers Eckhaus Latta (who are stars of the current Greater New York survey at MoMA PS1 in New York), Sterling Ruby, and writer Aram Saroyan. The show, whose full title is “Made in L.A. 2016: a, the, though, only,” will open June 12. Aram Moshayedi and Hamza Walker are curating.
