GENEVA—New York–based Edwynn Houk Gallery, which specializes in vintage and contemporary photography, is expanding its gallery business internationally, having reached an agreement with Switzerland’s Galerie Zur Stockeregg to lease its gallery space in Zurich. Mariska Nietzman has been named director of the Zurich gallery, which has been renamed Galerie Edwynn Houk Zur Stockeregg. Longtime dealer and collector Kaspar Fleischmann, of Galerie Zur Stockeregg, will assume an advisory role.
“We look forward to pooling our strengths in New York and Zurich and to expanding on the achievements of Kaspar Fleischmann within the European market,” said Nietzman, who will relocate to Zurich in September. She joined the Edwynn Houk Gallery last year, having previously been affiliated with the Lisson Gallery, London, and Lehmann Maupin, New York.
“This creates the first gallery in the field of photography with a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic,” Fleischmann said. “We are creating new synergies between our European client base and Houk’s American clients.”
Edwynn Houk started out as a private dealer in the 1970s, and opened his first gallery in Chicago in 1980. He moved to New York in 1991, as president of the partnership Houk Friedman Gallery. The partnership ended in 1997, and the gallery changed its name to Edwynn Houk Gallery and moved to its current location at 745 Fifth Avenue.
Kaspar Fleischmann established the Galerie Zur Stockeregg in 1979 as a source of master photographs spanning the history of the medium. Fleischmann will continue to work with his own vintage collection from a separate space adjacent to the gallery.
The inaugural show of Galerie Edwynn Houk Zur Stockeregg, which will have its official opening on September 23, will be “American Pioneers of Color,” featuring the work of Stephen Shore, Joel Meyerowitz and William Eggleston. It will be a restaging of a show held earlier this year at the New York gallery.
