The Institute of Contemporary Art in London has appointed Katharine Stout as deputy director and Richard Birkett as chief curator, both effective this spring, as reported by Artforum.
Since 2013 Stout has served as head of programming at the ICA. In that time she has curated exhibitions by Richard Hamilton, Tauba Auerbach, Hito Steyerl, Prem Sahib, Betty Woodman, and Sonia Boyce. Previously, Stout was curator of contemporary art at Tate Britain and cofounded the non-profit London gallery Drawing Room in 2001.
Birkett was previously a curator at ICA between 2007 and 2010. He then jumped across the pond, fulfilling the same role at New York’s Artists Space, before moving on to Yale Union in Portland, Oregon in 2016, where he further served as a curator and will continue as a collaborator through 2017. In his last stint at the ICA, Birkett was responsible for the concept and curation of the exhibition series “Nought to Sixty.” During his time at Artists Space, he co-curated the exhibitions of such artists as Bernadette Corporation, Lukas Duwenhögger, Laura Poitras, and Cameron Rowland.
