The Institute of Contemporary Art Miami announced two new curatorial appointments today, with Gean Moreno becoming curator of programs and Stephanie Seidel assistant curator. The news comes after the dust has settled a bit from the museum splitting from the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami in 2014, which included a lawsuit over MOCA’s permanent collection, 70 percent of which was retained by the city of North Miami.
Moreno comes to the ICA from the Miami arts nonprofit Cannonball, where he was artistic director and organized programs that included a Dawn Kasper commission and a course with Anton Vidokle. He previously worked at the nonprofit gallery Locust Projects in Miami and is on the advisory committee for the 2017 Whitney Biennial.
Seidel joins the Miami institution from the project space she founded in Düsseldorf called Between Arrival and Departure, which focuses on artist commissions. She also served as a curator for 25/25/25, a massive commissioning project for the Kunststiftung NRW in Germany.
“They bring rigorous global perspectives and wide-ranging institutional experience into dialogue with innovative approaches to interdisciplinary programming,” said ICA Miami director Ellen Salpeter, who was appointed last September.
While the two will assist in producing the museum’s 2016 programming, which includes shows of American artist John Miller, Brazilian artist Laura Lima, and New Zealand artist Susan Te Kahurangi King, they will mainly focus on creating exhibitions and related events for 2017, when the museum will move to its Design District space, designed by Spanish firm Aranguren & Gallegos Arquitectos and primarily funded by ARTnews Top 200 Collectors Irma and Norman Braman.
