The Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania has named Meg Onli assistant curator, effective immediately. Onli, a curator and writer who primarily focuses on race and the construction of space, had previously served as program coordinator at the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in Chicago. There, she contributed to the organization of shows such as “Architecture of Independence: African Modernism” (2015) and “Barbara Kasten: Stages” (2015).
Onli also founded the website Black Visual Archive, described as “a collection of critical writings dedicated to the documentation and review of contemporary black and post-black visual culture,” in 2010, which won her a 2012 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. Additionally, Onli was awarded a research grant from the Graham Foundation in 2014 for the project “Remaking the Black Metropolis: Contemporary Art, Urbanity, and Blackness in America,” a collaboration with curator Jamilee Polson Lacy.
Onli earned her master’s degree in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art and holds a bachelor’s degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has written for Art21, Daily Serving, and Art Papers.
