Pictures at an Exhibition presents images of one notable show every weekday.
Today’s show: “In The Box: Hank Willis Thomas’ Black Righteous Space” is currently on view at Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, Virginia until Sunday, October 4. The interactive video installation plays kaleidoscopic images in the colors of the Pan-African flag. One of these images is the Confederate flag, recast in various pairings of red, black, and green. Playing over the video are numerous clips of songs, speeches, and dialogue by famous black figures, including Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, James Baldwin, and Alice Walker. This soundtrack goes silent at random intervals in its 60-minute run, at which point visitors are invited to approach the mic and add their voices to the conversation.
