Independent Curators International has announced that it will be presenting dealer Marian Goodman with the 2016 Leo Award at its annual benefit auction in New York on October 26. The Leo Award, which recognizes an “extraordinary commitment to artists and pioneering contributions to the field of contemporary art,” according to a press release, has in the past been given to Michael Govan, Dimitris Daskalopoulos, Roy and Dorothy Lichtenstein, Miuccia Prada, and Dasha Zhukova.
ICI’s executive director, Renaud Proch, said in a statement,
“Last year, ICI marked its 40th anniversary, a milestone that Marian Goodman Gallery will celebrate just a year from now. Today, we’re proud to honor Marian Goodman for her steadfast support of so many of the artists who move us, impact society, and help us make sense of the world in which we live.”

Goodman started the publishing company Multiples in 1965, which distributed prints, books, and multiples by artists such as John Baldessari, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Smithson, Sol LeWitt, Gerhard Richter, and Marcel Broodthaers. She opened her eponymous gallery in 1977 with Broodthaers’ first U.S. show, which began her reputation as a champion of cutting-edge European art. Goodman later opened spaces in Paris and London, in 1997 and 2014, respectively.
