COURTESY INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART, UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
Ingrid Schaffner will curate the next Carnegie International, a survey of contemporary art held every three to five years at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum. Schaffner will start the job in May, and relocate to Pittsburgh in September. The show will open in the fall of 2018.
Schaffner has been the chief curator for the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania since 2000. She was also born in Pittsburgh, though she grew up in Los Gatos, California. According to the Carnegie Museum:
Schaffner envisions the 2018 edition of the Carnegie International as an exhibition informed by the perspectives of an international group of “traveling and thinking partners.” Invited for their expertise of different areas of the art world—geographic as well as disciplinary—each curator colleague will accompany Schaffner on a journey to a region unfamiliar to them both. Expanding on the role of the advisor, through the process of research, the partners will also spend time in Pittsburgh, integrating experiences of the particularities and perspectives of this city into the exhibition’s themes and ideas.
Founded in 1896, under the name the Annual Exhibition, the Carnegie International is the second oldest international survey of contemporary art, behind the Venice Biennale.
