Through September, ARTnews is previewing one-minute clips from the ninth season of Art21’s show Art in the Twenty-First Century, which travels from the Bay Area to Johannesburg to Berlin.
For this week’s preview, Art21 follows Icelandic-Danish artist Olafur Eliasson, who’s based in Berlin, to Los Angeles, where he is installing his piece Reality Projector at the Marciano Art Foundation. The work, a large-scale light installation that was on view until late August, aims to trigger an introspective experience within the viewer. “Instead of questioning the object,” Eliasson says, “you are in fact questioning yourself. Art can somehow offer an opportunity to do some self-evaluation.”
Season 9 of Art in the Twenty-First Century premieres September 21 at 9 p.m. on PBS. “San Francisco Bay Area” airs September 28 at 9 p.m.
