The New York Times reports that James Cohan Gallery will open a third space—in addition to its Chelsea and Shanghai locations—in what used to be a fish market on the Lower East Side at 291 Grand Street, not far from 47 Canal, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, and Nathalie Karg. The new outpost will debut on Halloween this year with a show featuring Robert Smithson’s seldom-seen Pop works, created between 1961 through 1964. “The Lower East Side is associated with showing younger artists, and here’s an exhibition of an artist when he was in his mid-20s who then went on to make landmark sculpture,” Cohan explained to the Times.
Having recently added to its roster Scottish conceptual artist Katie Paterson, Elias Sime, and Ho Chi Minh City-based collective the Propeller Group, the expansion will free up space at the Chelsea flagship. Former senior curator at the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio, David Norr, has been brought on as director of the new Lower East Side gallery.
