Australia’s Biennale of Sydney announced today that Jo-Anne Birnie Danzker will be its new CEO and director. She will oversee the opening of the 2018 edition of the biennial, which will be curated by Mami Kataoka, and which recently announced part of its artist list.
Birnie Danzker was previously the director of Seattle’s Frye Art Museum. She has also been director of the Museum Villa Stuck Munich and the Vancouver Art Gallery, and has curated shows for the Deutsche Guggenheim, the Underground Museum, MoMA PS1, and other institutions.
“For nearly half a century, the Biennale has been a meeting place and a platform for exceptional artists and curators from Australia and around the globe to share their knowledge,” the new Australian-born director said in a statement. “I am honored to join the Biennale team and return to Sydney, one of the most spectacular, culturally vibrant cities in the world.”
