COURTESY ARTADIA
Artadia announced today that the winners of its 2016 San Francisco Artadia Awards, given annually to Bay Area–based artists, are Josh Faught and Ruth Laskey. They will receive $10,000 each, and are now eligible for the National Artadia Award, the winner of which will be announced at the end of this year.
Faught and Laskey both make work that involves craft. Faught is more interested in the history behind craft, in particular textiles, and has mined his medium for its sociopolitical meaning. Laskey, on the other hand, typically makes abstract work recalling woven designs. Fittingly, her work often is made using a loom.
The jury that compiled the awards’ finalists included Jenny Gheith, an assistant curator of sculpture and painting at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Lauren Haynes, an associate curator at the Studio Museum in Harlem; and Brian Sholis, a photography curator at the Cincinnati Art Museum. Ceci Moss, a San Francisco–based curator, worked with Gheith to determine the winners.
Here are some details about the funding of the awards:
Artadia’s Awards and cultural programs in San Francisco are made possible with the support of the San Francisco Foundation, the Fleishhacker Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, Artadia’s Board of Directors, Council members, and many generous individuals throughout the United States. To honor the generous gift of the San Francisco Foundation Ruth Laskey was named James D. Phelan Awardee.
