June Yap has been named the new curatorial, programs, and publications director for the Singapore Art Museum, according to Today, an English-language newspaper in the city-state.
Yap was a curator of new-media exhibitions at the museum in 2003 and 2004, and she has remained involved since as a member of the institution’s acquisitions committee and the Singapore Biennale 2016 Advisory Committee. From 2012 to 2014, she also served in a two-year curatorial residency at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
The Singapore Art Museum recently announced a $90 million revamp with a targeted completion in 2021. Exhibitions will continue in the museum’s main space until 2018 and then, after the next Singapore Biennale, will move in the interim to other spaces.
Yap begins her new post in September and told Today, “SAM has come a long way since it first opened in 1996.” She continued, “This period of rejuvenation and improvement of its buildings presents a great opportunity for reflection upon the museum’s historic moments, as well as to forge its future path.”
