Artadia, the nonprofit that recognizes artists around America with various prizes, has named Kahlil Joseph and Gala Porras-Kim the winners of its Los Angeles Awards, which are given annually to artists based in the California city and come with $10,000.
Of the two, Joseph is better known. He has worked on video projects for Arcade Fire, Kendrick Lamar, and Beyoncé, and he has edited Arthur Jafa’s 2013 film Dreams Are Colder Than Death. He has also worked with Terrence Malick and Doug Aitken.
Porras-Kim, on the other hand, more often shows art in gallery settings. Her meditations on how artifacts are exhibited and what we deem worthy of being on view at an institution were recently seen at the Hammer’s “Made in L.A.” biennial.
Carmen Argote, Jibade Khalil-Huffman, and Gelare Khoshgozaran were also considered for the awards. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles’s senior curator, Bennett Simpson, worked with Anuradha Vikram, the artistic director of 18th Street Arts Center, to select the winners.
