NEW YORK—Moderately priced works by big-name artists fueled strong sales at Christie’s, where prints and multiples realized $1.4 million on Feb. 9-10. Of 513 lots offered, 447, or 87 percent, were sold. By dollar the auction was 94 percent sold.
The top lot was Alex Katz’s 1990 Alex and Ada, the 1960s to the 1980s, a set of eight screenprints in color. Estimated at $3,000/5,000, the lot fetched $19,200.
This was followed by Robert Rauschenberg’s Waves, a 1969 lithograph from his “Stoned Moon Series” that also soared past its modest estimate of $2,000/3,000 to reap $18,000.
Selling within estimate was Jim Dine’s LA Eyeworks, 1982, an etching (aquatint and carborundum in colors) that earned $14,400 (estimate: $10,000/ 15,000).
