Los Angeles–based nonprofit art organization LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division) announced today that it will launch an artist residency program this winter. Titled LANDxAIR, the program, which will be held annually, will take place at various institutions, both in America and abroad. Its first partnered institution will be the Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson, in Arizona.
LANDxAIR’s residencies will be three to six weeks in length. By the end of the residency, the artists, who are chosen by curators at LAND and the partnered institution, are expected to create a site-specific work in response to where they are staying.
Artists chosen for LANDxAIR’s first residency program will stay in MOCA Tucson’s neo-brutalist firehouse. They will be given access to a private studio, where curators will oversee their work process. A $1,500 stipend will also be supplied. In January, two artists will be selected for the first residency.
According to a press release, LAND chose MOCA Tucson because it was in a particularly rich part of Arizona, and to “inspire new ways of thinking through the cultivation, interpretation, and exhibition of cutting-edge art of our time.”
In a statement, Shamim M. Momin, LAND’s director and curator, said, “In the spirit of LAND’s nomadic mission, the LANDxAIR residency—this inaugural edition and then ongoing—seeks to offer artists the opportunity and support for innovative introspection, idea-making, and creative exploration, all within an inspiring context.”
