Laurel Ptak will be the new executive director of Art in General, starting on February 13. She will replace Anne Barlow, who had been with the New York–based nonprofit since 2007, and who, this past November, revealed that she would leave to become the artistic director of Tate St Ives.
Ptak has served as director of the New York nonprofit Triangle since 2014. She has also held positions at the Tensta Konsthall in Stockholm, the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, and MoMA PS1 and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. She is also an artist and a cofounder of the first Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-Thon.
“Art in General offers an essential platform for highlighting the perspectives, ideas, and practices of artists of diverse background and vision, and I have long been a follower and admirer,” Ptak said in a statement. “Artists, now more than ever, have an important role to play in our ongoing public discourse, helping to pave the way for common ground and mutual understanding. I am thrilled to be joining the team, and I look forward to working with the board and staff to extend opportunities to an even broader scope of voices, to engage our audiences on the issues most relevant to art and contemporary life.”
