FILM SOCIETY OF LINCOLN CENTER
This year, Laurie Anderson joins a group of artists that include Laurie Simmons, James Rosenquist, John Baldessari, and Saul Bass, all of whom have designed posters for the New York Film Festival (NYFF). The Film Society of Lincoln Center revealed Anderson’s poster for the 53rd NYFF on its website yesterday.
Anderson, who is known for her experimental music, said in a statement that she was experimenting with merging visual-art traditions with film techniques. “The NYFF is such an eclectic and ecstatically wild mix of films, and I wanted to try to capture some of the variety of subjects and styles,” Anderson said. “The original piece this is based on, Follow the Sound, is 18 feet long with lots of plots and characters and fragments. I made this painting two years ago when I was feeling especially inspired by the scale of projected film and the possibilities of abrupt jump cuts. I’m so happy it’s the poster for this year’s festival.”
Anderson’s poster will be available for $25 at this year’s film festival, which begins on September 25. In the middle of the film festival’s three-week run, Anderson will also unveil an installation and stage a performance at the Park Avenue Armory, beginning on October 2.
