Liste, the smaller and more youthful satellite fair that runs alongside Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, has announced its slate of galleries that will exhibit this June.
The slate names returning participants such as Mexico City’s House of Gaga, Los Angeles’s Overduin & Co., and the Brussels/Bushwick gallery Clearing, who all contributed highlights to last year’s fair. Newcomers include New York’s Bridget Donahue and Dublin’s Ellis King (which was in the news last week due to some new legal action in the Jute-Sack Saga).
There are a few conspicuously absent galleries too, including 47 Canal, which will be showing in the main fair with a solo booth of work by Ajay Kurian in the Statements sector, and Laurel Gitlen Gallery, which sadly closed down.
Also a tipster pointed out a quirk in the fair’s application and fee policy: any gallery showing an artist over the age of 40 has to apply in a separate category and, if accepted, has to pay CHF 16,000 (roughly $16,700) for the booth—double what a gallery without any over-40 artists has to pay. It also says a gallery attempting to stage a solo show with an artist over 40 will not be accepted.
This may seem unfair, especially in an age of rule-bending, when Greater New York can include old and dead artists alongside all the 20-somethings in what’s one of New York’s most prominent exhibitions of emerging art. Then again, seeing as Liste describes itself in its mission statement as “dedicated exclusively to new galleries and primarily to young art,” maybe such prejudices are to be understood.
