Last week, the soundtrack to the recent Maggie Lee movie Mommy was released on iTunes and Spotify by the film’s producer, Beta Pictures. The soundtrack features music from, among others, James K, Gobby, Physical Therapy, and, for the first time on a digital streaming platform, Baltimore’s Odwalla88.
The album weaves often-diaristic spoken-word interludes culled from the movie—which is about the unexpected death of Lee’s mother and the artist’s own coming of age—in and out of the soundtrack, giving the record as a whole a narrative heft that runs concurrent with with the film itself. There is a pleasant, unforced eclecticism in the song selections, which run from lo-fi electronica to punk, folk, and art-indebted music, including a song from the artist Brendan Fowler’s seminal 2000s project Barr. It is the artist and musicians Air Pop and Pinky Rose’s (one half of Odwalla88) cover of Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So,” however, that steals the show.
