Just a quick service announcement that it’s Independence Day this coming Monday, July 4 in the United States of America, which means that quite a few galleries are closing their doors on Saturday and Sunday so that dealers and staff can savor a long weekend. So, if you’re planning visits to exhibitions anywhere in the 50 states on Saturday or Sunday, July 2 or 3, it would be wise to call ahead. Nothing worse than showing up at a gallery and finding the doors locked and the lights out. (Museums, for the most part, are keeping their normal hours, but it still can’t hurt to double-check.)
Also, since we’re here, a reminder that many galleries have by now switched to their summer schedules, meaning that those which are typically open Tuesday through Saturday may now be Monday through Friday, and those which are Wednesday through Sunday may now be Tuesday through Saturday. But there are really no definite rules for this type of thing (some dealers are taking the rest of the summer off), so again, check websites and call ahead.
Having said all that, the New York art world, at least, is not going completely dark until after the holiday. There’s a sporty-looking group show by Brian Belott opening at Gavin Brown’s Lower East Side space this evening, from 6 to 9 p.m. (The artist list is just wild—it includes Darren Bader, Melissa Brown, Josh Kline, Annie Pearlman, and many more.) And on Sunday, a Katharina Grosse painting installation will open to the public at Fort Tilden, with the official festivities taking place from 4 to 6 p.m.
