It’s been about six months since we first started inviting artists to select a week’s work of shows and performances for our daily slide show “Pictures at an Exhibition,” highlighting notable museum and gallery exhibitions from around the world. So far, Hank Willis Thomas, Dawn Kasper, and Joshua Abelow have taken up the task. This week, to coincide with our coverage of Frieze New York, we invited conceptual artist Mark Dion to take the reins, giving us a look at the exhibitions he’s currently enjoying.
Dion’s latest solo show, which recently closed at Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in New York and was titled “The Library for the Birds of New York and Other Marvels,” continued the artist’s interest in presenting meticulously formed and curated large-scale installations, which in a way resemble the techniques that archaeologists and other scientists use. At times, his works can resemble a modern-day cabinet of curiosities. His interests include science and art, and his selections for this week are no different.
