DEIRDRE POWER/COURTESY EVA INTERNATIONAL
Matt Packer will be the new director of EVA International, the Irish biennial that surveys the contemporary art scene. He will begin in his new position in June.
Packer comes from the CCA Centre for Contemporary Art Derry~Londonderry, where he has been director since 2014. He has worked on such biennials and festivals as the Lofoten International Art Festival and the upcoming Tulca Festival of Visual Arts, and was also a member of the selection committee for the British Pavilion at this year’s Venice Biennale.
He will help oversee the upcoming EVA International, which is slated to open in April 2018, and which will be curated by Inti Guerrero. Past editions have been organized by Koyo Kouoh, Hou Hanru, and Rosa Martinez.
“Now approaching its 40th anniversary, it’s remarkable how EVA has continued to set the horizon for changing ideas of artistic and curatorial practice, while also being respondent to broader cultural and political changes that have impacted Ireland and its relations to the wider world,” Packer said in a statement. “Given its enormous legacy, I am very proud to be entrusted with the job of developing EVA over the coming years, strengthening its voice and deepening its impact at local, national and international levels.”
