The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts has announced its 2017 Artist Project Grants, with a focus on projects at nonprofit institutions and organization in Los Angeles. This year’s batch includes a Charlemagne Palestine show at Human Resources/356 S. Mission Rd. and an exhibition about artist activism on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border at the Vincent Price Art Museum.
This is the second group of grantees the foundation has selected. The grants, which in total amount to $319,000, are designated to be used to fund exhibitions and events. Charles Gaines, Gene Moreno, Frances Stark, Astria Suparak, and Jan Tumlir worked together to select the grantees.

Human Resources/356 S. Mission Rd., for “GesammttkkunnsttMeshuggahhLaandtttt,” a series of performances and an exhibition by Charlemagne Palestine ($40,000)
- The Industry, for Galileo, a play by Yuval Sharon ($40,000)
- La Plaza de Cultura y Artes, for “L.A. History: A Mexican Perspective,” an exhibition about Chicano murals around Los Angeles ($40,000)
- REDCAT, for “Chalk Circles,” an exhibition about artists working with “acting methodologies” ($40,000)
- The Society for the Activation of Social Space Through Art and Sound, for Changes: 64 Studies for 6 Harps, a new piece by James Tenney ($33,000)
- University Art Museum, California State University, Long Beach, for an exhibition of work by Lauren Woods ($40,000)
- Vincent Price Art Museum, for “Regeneración: Three Generations of Revolutionary Ideology,” an exhibition about artist activists in America and Mexico ($50,000)
- Pasadena Art Council/Volume, for Gifts of the Spirit: Auto da Fe, a piece by Ron Athey ($36,000)
