The Minneapolis Institute of Art has announced the appointment of Gabriel Ritter as curator of contemporary art, beginning this May.
Ritter currently serves as assistant curator of contemporary art at the Dallas Museum of Art, where he organizes exhibitions for the museum’s “Concentrations” series that focuses on emerging and underrepresented artists from around the world. He has curated shows with artists like Stephen Lapthisophon, Slavs and Tatars, Chosil Kil, and Margaret Lee. Ritter also site-curated the Dallas editions of traveling exhibitions “International Pop” in 2015 and “Cindy Sherman” in 2013.
Ritter has additionally headed the acquisition of a number of photography, video, and installation works for the Dallas Museum of Art’s permanent collection, including pieces by Darren Bader, Anne Collier, Sharon Hayes, Annette Kelm, Sadamasa Motonaga, Shinro Ohtake, Rachel Rose, Kazuo Shiraga, Hito Steyerl, Koki Tanaka, Mika Tajima, and Christopher Williams.
Previously, Ritter was awarded a Japan Foundation Doctoral Fellowship, for which he completed dissertation research on Japanese Surrealism, and before that, he served as a curatorial assistant at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, for three years. He is currently in the process of finishing his Ph.D. in art history at the University of California, Los Angeles.
