WIKIMEDIA
Miranda July–filmmaker, artist, novelist, etc.–unveiled a new messaging app today at the Venice Film Festival called “Somebody.” It sounds…intensely flawed? Here is her description:
“When you send your friend a message through Somebody, it goes–not to your friend–but to the Somebody user nearest your friend. This person (likely a stranger) delivers the message verbally, acting as your stand-in.”
The app has a tagline that goes: “Texting is tacky. Calling is awkward. E-mail is old. Next time try Somebody.”
Yes, because it is so much less awkward to have a complete stranger act as a middle man in a conversation between you and your friend. And what if the stranger is old? Now we’re stuck with this same ol’ e-mail problem!
This idea could have a bright future in the media industry, though. If you have any thoughts or complaints about this blog post, instead of voicing them in the comments section, just tell the nearest stranger and then have that person find me. Good luck!
