The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts announced this morning that the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit has received a $100,000 matching grant in support of its programming at Mike Kelley’s Mobile Homestead. The money will be provided over a period of two years.
Located on MOCAD grounds, Mobile Homestead, which was built in 2013, is an exact copy of Kelley’s childhood home in the Detroit suburb of Westland that he intended as both an artwork and a space for exhibitions and public programs. The outside of Mobile Homestead can also be transported by semi-truck to stage events beyond the MOCAD campus. A press release touting the news added, “Rather than projecting ideas out into the world, Mobile Homestead was created to invite the community’s ideas in.” (Those interested in suggesting projects can email mobilehomestead@mocadetroit.org.)
The space is currently home to Carlos Rolon’s Vintage Voyages and Atomic Memories, which re-creates his childhood home on the South Side of Chicago, where his mother ran an illegal nail salon. This fall, it will present an exhibition based on memorabilia from the current presidential campaign and host parties during debates and on election night.
