ART VS. REAL ESTATE
A Detroit artist is suing the owner of a building upon which a mural of hers is painted, citing possible development plans as a threat to her work. The piece, which is apparently something of a local icon, is said to resemble a bleeding rainbow. [Detroit Free Press]
GIVING GENEROUSLY
Before she died last summer, longtime patron of the Dallas Museum of Art Dorace Fichtenbaum noted in her will that the museum could have the pick of her collection. Olivier Meslay, who is heading the acquisition, told the New York Times, “For us it was a sudden wealth, a changing gift.” [The New York Times]
Visual artists such as Anish Kapoor, Cecily Brown, Teresita Fernández, Jasper Johns, Judy Pfaff, and Matt Saunders are participating in an auction to raise money for the purpose of establishing a choreographic residency in Pawling, New York. Choreographer Stephen Petroni has set a fundraising goal at $3 million. [The New York Times]
COURTROOM DRAMA
Back in 2011, an Indonesian crested macaque monkey took several selfies with a camera he found in his nature preserve. The camera belonged to photographer David Slater, who then controversially published the photos in a book under his own copyright. Now, a judge has finally ruled that the monkey does not, in fact, own the copyright to the selfies. [Hyperallergic]
