David Platzker, a curator in the Museum of Modern Art’s department of drawings and prints, has resigned. He had been with MoMA since 2013, and is a co-organizer, with MoMA’s Christopher Cherix and Tessa Ferreyros and the Hammer Museum’s Connie Butler, of the museum’s forthcoming Adrian Piper retrospective, which is to open at the New York institution on March 31. The news was first reported this morning by Artforum.
Platzker told Artforum that he was leaving the museum to “initiate projects that more closely mirror my long-term interests surrounding art, artists, and context in our contemporary world.” He plans to continue working on a book about the late curator Kynaston McShine’s 1970 exhibition “Information.”
On Twitter today, Platzker added that he wanted to work on “new projects with art and artists engaged with crafting works that respond to the global societies we are presently living in.”
Prior to joining MoMA as a curator in 2013, Platzker founded and ran Specific Object, a gallery and bookstore that was open from 2004 to 2013 that specialized in objects, publications, and ephemera related to the 1960s art scene. From 1998 to 2004, he was the executive director of the New York organization Printed Matter. He has also held positions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Guggenheim Museum.
