By now, you may have heard that the leader of Spokane, Washington’s branch of the NAACP, Rachel Dolezal, has allegedly misrepresented herself as black or biracial. Newsweek reports that Dolezal’s ancestry is in fact Czech, Swedish, German, and very slightly Native American. According to her LinkedIn, Dolezal is not only the president of the Spokane NAACP chapter, but a professor of Africana Studies at Eastern Washington University and a community spokesperson on racially-influenced police violence.
ARTnews came across her blog, where it appears that, in addition to the above, Dolezal is also an artist, with an MFA from Howard University in Washington, D.C. This past December, Dolezal posted on Twitter (@HarlmRenaissanc), “My work will be features [sic] at a group show for First Friday in January at a new gallery space in Spokane…More details soon :).”
Below are some images of her work, including a painting that bears a resemblance to photographs from Chris Marker’s “Passengers” series. Note to any potential buyers, from her blog: “Free shipping on orders exceeding $2,000.”
