The Los Angeles Times reports that Naima J. Keith will leave the Studio Museum in Harlem to become the deputy director of the California African American Museum, in Los Angeles.
In her five years as associate curator at the Studio Museum, Keith produced a number of critically acclaimed solo shows of artists such as Titus Kaphar, Samuel Levi Jones, and Robert Pruitt. Notable among them was “Charles Gaines: Gridwork 1974–1989,” which was nominated for the AICA Award for Best Monographic Show in New York, in 2014. The Gaines show later traveled to the Hammer Museum, where Keith was once a curatorial fellow.
“She was the top candidate,” George Davis, the director of the California African American Museum, told the Times. “She was so impressive. And I really feel that the California African American Museum will have a great vision as a result of her presence.”
