Neville Wakefield has been named the curator for the spring 2016 season at Red Bull Studios, the energy-drink-supported art space in Chelsea, which in the past has organized exhibitions by the likes of DIS, Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe, and Peter Coffin. Over the years Wakefield has done such things as curated Frieze Projects, designed $7,500 suitcases, written catalog essays on Matthew Barney and Ed Ruscha, edited issues of Playboy, commissioned Christian Marclay to make a work for a ski lift in Gstaad, curated shows at Gladstone Gallery and Mary Boone Gallery, convinced Christopher Wool and Richard Prince to make skateboards for Supreme, served as senior curatorial advisor to PS1, overseen the creation of extremely pornographic short films, and, um, dated Minnie Driver. At the caffeine-backed art hub, he’ll be bringing shows by Miami-based artist Nicolas Lobo and Los Angeles–based Hayden Dunham, plus a number of talks (here’s one from earlier this year, with LaMonte Young).
“I’m always interested in spaces and opportunities that challenge the traditional exhibition model and Red Bull Studios New York does just that,” Wakefield said in a statement.
All of this is somewhat unlikely due to the fact that Red Bull Studios nearly burned to the ground earlier this year, so everyone should be thankful there’s a space at all.
