The New Foundation Seattle announced today that it has created a grant called the Career Incentive Funds (CIF), which will be awarded to Seattle- and Portland-based artists, curators, and writers. The news comes on the heels of last month’s announcement that Martha Rosler won $100,000 through the foundation’s inaugural 100K Prize.
The guidelines for the CIF grants are pretty open-ended—applicants must be based in or around Seattle or Portland and have to be working with contemporary art, either at a local or national level. The money awarded through the grant can be used for travel, research, studying, workshops, or residencies. The deadline is February 7 and you can apply on the New Foundation’s website.
In a statement, Yoko Ott, the foundation’s director, explained that the grant was intended to show how important the Pacific Northwest is for the arts. “Extending our reach to Portland acknowledges the greater Pacific Northwest as a cultural corridor,” she said. “We hope Career Incentive Funds will stimulate individual exploration, study, and growth. We also hope the grant will encourage residents from Seattle and Portland to mix and work together more often.”
