Páramo Gallery in Guadalajara, Mexico, has opened a space in New York and will launch a residency program in Mexico City this month. Their new gallery on the Upper East Side, open by appointment only, is currently showing a collection of works by artists from Páramo’s roster, among them Naama Tsabar, Eamon Ore-Giron, Francisco Toledo, and Faivovich & Goldberg.
The launch of the new space is led by the gallery’s newly appointed executive director, Alexandra Garcia Waldman. Previously, she served as the artistic director of Brazil’s Galeria Nara Roesler, where she helped the gallery open a New York branch, in 2014.
“It is a thrill to be re-launching Páramo into what we think [will] be a distinctive gallery experience, bringing new artists to the gallery, both established and new, further expanding the gallery’s global visibility by opening the new space in New York and collaborating on our artist residency in Mexico City,” Waldman said.
For its residency program, Páramo will partner with Tetetlán, a Luis Barragán–designed home in Mexico City. Emanuel Tovar, a Guadalajara-born artist, is the first artist in residence there. On December 14, he will perform his work Un surco en la nada at Tetetlán; it will be the first time the work has been staged in Mexico.
Waldman said of the residency program, “Barragán is a pillar of 20th-century Mexican aesthetics, and being able to use it as a platform for artist to come into contact with Mexico City and Mexican culture is a very unique experience.”
