The Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid has received a donation of 45 works from the Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros (CPPC), the foundation created by ARTnews “Top 200” collectors Patricia Phelps de Cisneros and Gustavo A. Cisneros. The gift includes works produced since the 1990s by 33 artists from Latin America and its diaspora.
The gift comes as the Reina Sofia looks to bolster its holdings of Latin American art. Last week, Miami-based collector Jorge M. Pérez announced that he would give a $1.5 million gift to the Reina Sofia that would include around 50 works, valued at $1 million, as well as $500,000 for acquisition of new work by both Spanish and Latin American artists.
Of the 33 artists represented in the Cisneros gift, the majority come from Brazil and Venezuela, with others from Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico, as well as Latinx artists in the U.S. The art ranges from painting and media work to sculpture, artists books, and installations. Among the artists represented in the gift are Teresita Fernández, Valeska Soares, José Dávila, Magdalena Fernández, Fernanda Gomes, Miguel Ángel Ríos, Iran do Espírito Santo, and Rosângela Rennó.
The donation is the latest in a recent spree. In January, the Cisneros collection gave 202 works created since the 1960s to six museums around the world, including the Reina Sofia. In June 2017, 119 works of colonial Latin American art went to five institutions. In October 2016, the Museum of Modern Art in New York received 102 works as part of a gift that established the Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Research Institute for the Study of Art from Latin America at the museum.
