Some very nice news just came in across the wire: the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Research Institute, and Performa announced that they have commissioned a new work from Yvonne Rainer titled The Concept of Dust, or How do you look when there’s nothing left to move? Performances of the in-progress piece have been set for October 3 and 4 at the institute.
“Yvonne Rainer has been making challenging, radical works of art that are both deeply personal and politically relevant for 50 years,” Thomas W. Gaehtgens, the director of the institute, said in a statement sent to press. “Working closely with artists like Rainer is a significant part of the research and collecting that we do here at the Getty.” (There’s also a Rainer show on view there through October 12.)
“Rainer is forever radical,” RoseLee Goldberg, Performa’s founding director, added. “Her newest works serve to remind us of why her ideas have endured. She is truly a national treasure.”
Just a reminder: there’s never a bad time to read Rainer’s 1965 “No Manifesto.”
