This morning was shaping up to be a Monday morning like any other—average, mediocre, without surprise. But then it took an exciting turn: an email landed in my inbox stating that a complete catalogue raisonné of the work of the late, great artist Peter Cain has been published online, at petercain.org. Things have been looking up since then.
Cain made his name in the 1990s with exquisite paintings nearly surreal cars and car-like forms that give off powerful erotic energies. Because the artist died in 1997, at the age of 37, of a cerebral hemorrhage, his work is too little known, though an elegant survey exhibition earlier this fall at Matthew Marks Gallery in New York, the first Cain solo show in 11 years, helped to bring it greater attention.
And now we have this website, which features the artist’s paintings, drawings, photographs, collages, and more. Matthew Marks is running the project, which invites those with information about Cain’s works to reach out and share it. Have a look. Enjoy.
