The New Art Dealers Alliance (NADA) and Artadia, a nonprofit dedicated to giving artists grants, announced Philip Smith as the winner of the joint 2016 Miami Beach NADA Artadia Award. The prize is given annually to an artist exhibited in the NADA Miami Beach fair and comes with a $5,000 unrestricted grant.
Smith, whose work was on offer at the booth for the Miami-based nonprofit Locust Projects, was one of five artists in Douglas Crimp’s landmark 1977 “Pictures” exhibition. He was also included in the 1991 Whitney Biennial and has served as a managing editor of GQ magazine.
Highlighting the Miami-based artist’s photo edition Night, the two-person jury of Jen Mergel, a contemporary art curator at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and Jacob Proctor, a curator at the University of Chicago’s Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society, wrote in a statement: “A digital scan of his damaged, decades-old 35mm slide of an African sculpture he collected both continues and updates the artist’s longstanding investigation into the generative capacity of photographic imagery.”
