Just a quick note that, if you’re going to be in New York this evening, at 8 p.m. the Poetry Project at St. Mark’s Church in the East Village will be holding an event in honor of Jane Freilicher, the New York School painter who died earlier this week at the age of 90.
There will be readings by friends, colleagues, and admirers like John Ashbery, Adam Fitzgerald, Maxine Groffsky, Tom Healy, Alex Katz, Vincent Katz, Amy Klein, Jenni Quilter, Karen Roffman, Charles Simic, Emily Skillings, Richard Thomas, and Anne Waldman.
Following those appearances, there will be a screening of “Presenting Jane” (a short film, co-directed by Harrison Starr, with a screenplay by James Schuyler, and starring Jane Freilicher, Frank O’Hara and John Ashbery) and Rudy Burckhardt’s “Mounting Tension.”
The affair, which is cosponsored by the Harvard Film Archive and Tibor de Nagy Gallery, which showed the artist, had originally been planned as a birthday party. “Our 90th birthday event for her will go on this Friday as planned,” the organizers wrote, “but as a celebration of her life and her extraordinary career as a painter and a ‘painter among poets.’”
