COURTESY PRINTED MATTER
Printed Matter, the New York nonprofit specializing in artists’ books and publications, has appointed Max Schumann as executive director. Schumann started working at Printed Matter in 1989 as a book packer, then served as manager, associate director, and acting director “on a number of occasions,” according to the organization.
Printed Matter, currently located on Tenth Avenue in Chelsea, will be moving to a larger location in that neighborhood this fall, at Eleventh Avenue and 26th Street. Schumann will oversee programming, development, and administrative duties, as well as Printed Matter’s transition into a larger institution. They’ve undertaken the largest capital campaign in their 40-year history, and hope to raise $850,000 toward renovations.
“We are at an extraordinary moment in Printed Matter’s history,” Schumann said in a statement. “With the recent resurgence of artists’ publishing, we are uniquely positioned to support this activity on a number of fronts.”
Philip Aarons, the chair of Printed Matter’s board of directors, said in his own statement that “for many years Max has been the heart and soul of Printed Matter.”
