Pulse Contemporary Art Fair has named artist Tony Gum the winner of the 2017 Miami Beach Pulse Prize. The Cape Town-based Gum, who is represented by the South African Christopher Moller Gallery, showed a series of five large portraits at the fair. Completed at the start of South Africa’s women’s month this year, the series “Ode to She” expresses and celebrates what it means to be a Xhosa woman.
The $2,500 jury-awarded prize is given to one artist exhibiting in a solo booth at Pulse.
