After nearly a decade as associate director at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Kathy Halbreich is leaving to run the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, according to the New York Times. She takes the place of Christy MacLear, who was hired by Sotheby’s last December to build up its advisory services for estates.
Halbreich organized the critically lauded 2014 Sigmar Polke retrospective at MoMA and is at work on a Bruce Nauman retrospective that is slated to open at the museum next year. She starts at the Rauschenberg Foundation in November, but will see the Nauman show through to completion, while also acting as an advisor to the museum’s director, Glenn Lowry.
Before joining MoMA in 2008, Halbreich had been director of the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis for 16 years, overseeing its expansion by Herzog & de Meuron, a project that was completed in 2005.
The Rauschenberg Foundation administers a variety of philanthropic and artistic efforts, including a residency at the artist’s onetime residence on Captiva Island in Florida, scholarship on Robert Rauschenberg’s work, and grants to artists and various causes.
