Reena Spaulings Fine Art, the Lower East Side gallery, has appointed Christopher Schwartz as its new director.
Named for the main character in an eponymous novel collectively authored by the Bernadette Corporation, Reena Spaulings works with artists like Merlin Carpenter, Seth Price, Juliana Huxtable, and has been a key launching pad for figures like Bjarne Melgaard, Alex Israel, and Josh Smith.
The gallery is run by John Kelsey and Emily Sundblad, the artist and performer, who co-founded the space together in 2003.
Schwartz, who will work on expanding the gallery’s collector base, spent a year on staff at Gagosian, and previous to that was at Metro Pictures for two years. “Reena Spaulings has a dynamic program,” Schwartz said, “ and I’m interested in introducing new collectors and institutions nationally and internationally to the gallery’s innovative approach to exhibiting art.”
