The Miami-based firm Rene Gonzalez Architects has been selected to design a building to house the collection of Fairlholme Unlimited, the arts-related arm of the nonprofit Fairholme Foundation founded by collector Chloe Berkowitz in 2012. The firm has a history of working for Miami-based cultural institutions—it previously designed the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation’s building in the city’s downtown area.
The building for Fairlholme Unlimited will be located on 26th Street between Biscayne Boulevard and NE 2nd Avenue. It will play home to two major works from the Fairholme collection: James Turrell’s light installation Aten Reign, which first premiered at the Guggenheim Museum in New York as a site-specific installation in 2013, and Richard Serra’s Cor-Ten sculpture Passage of Time (2014), which was initially on view in a retrospective at Qatar’s QMA Gallery.
Fairholme Unlimited has also named several new board members. Gabriela Palmieri, the founder of Palmieri Fine Art, Inc., will be the chairman of the board. Interior designer Margaret Marquez, Art Center South Florida president and CEO Dennis Scholl, and construction project manager Kevin Schwarte have also joined the board.
Of the new board members, Berkowitz said, in a statement, “Together, they bring a wealth of experience and expertise. From Dennis’s engagement with the Miami arts community to Gabriela’s renowned position in the international art world, each are deeply committed to our organization’s growth. Accompanied by Margaret’s early support in helping to build the collection as well as Kevin’s instrumental role in the relocation of our Serra from Doha to Miami, I have every confidence that their distinct and collective knowledge will profoundly enrich Fairholme Unlimited and our impact on the community.”
