Rhizome, the New York–based digital arts nonprofit that is affiliated with the New Museum, today announced the lineup for its annual Seven on Seven conference, which brings together seven artists with seven tech people for one-on-one collaborations.
This year’s conference, scheduled for May 14, is the eighth since its founding and includes artists Miranda July, Trisha Baga, and Hito Steyerl.
“This lineup is really fantastic,” Zachary Kaplan, Rhizome’s executive director, said in a phone interview. “As a fan, I think it’s really exciting.”
Previous Seven on Seven teams have included last year’s collaboration between Laura Poitras, Ai Weiwei, and Jacob Appelbaum and 2012’s pairing between Taryn Simon and the late Aaron Swartz, which produced Image Atlas.
This year’s edition will be the first under Kaplan’s leadership, as he was appointed director at the end of last September.
“The format is really unique in what it asks of people,” Kaplan said. “They trust us to find someone to pair them with that makes sense. It’s full of risk.”
This year also marks an important milestone in the organization’s history, as Rhizome, founded in 1996, celebrates its 20th year. It has already been a busy first few months for the nonprofit, with the start of Open Score, a new annual symposium it created with the New Museum, and the announcement that it received a $600,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation to help further its field-leading digital preservation efforts.
Tickets for the very popular event will be available here.
